(Press release, December 5, 2023) – On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, members of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg are taking to the streets to demonstrate for full funding of Austria’s higher education institutions. Cedric Keller, Chair of the University of Salzburg Student Union (ÖH), criticizes the new university budget plan: „Unser Anspruch muss es sein, dass Universitäten nicht nur im Status Quo verharren. Wir brauchen eine angemessene Ausfinanzierung der Hochschulen und eine soziale Absicherung von jenen, die in den Unis arbeiten und studieren.“ []
Faced with financial challenges, an increasing number of higher education institutions are having to rely on third-party funding, which frequently comes from private donors. „Langfristig kann ein Finanzierungsmodell durch Drittmittel die Freiheit der Wissenschaft und Forschung gefährden. Nur eine langfristige Ausfinanzierung der Hochschulen durch die Politik kann den freien Zugang zum Studium und eine wirklich unabhängige Forschung und Lehre sicherstellen“ [“In the long term, a funding model based on third-party funds can jeopardize the freedom of science and research. Only long-term, comprehensive public funding of higher education institutions can ensure free access to university studies and truly independent research and teaching.”], adds Stephanie Wolfgruber, 1. vice Chairperson of the Student Union at the University of Salzburg.
The lack of funding also jeopardizes the already precarious situation of many students who rely on financial aid. Consequently, protests are also being held against the strict requirements for receiving student aid and in favor of increasing it. „In Zeiten von Inflation und Teuerung ist die Situation für Studierende alles andere als leicht. Wenn man dann noch an die teuren Salzburger Mieten denkt, wird der Bedarf für finanzielle Absicherung von Studierenden nur umso offensichtlicher“ [“In times of inflation and rising costs, the situation for students is anything but easy. When one also considers the high rents in Salzburg, the need for financial security for students becomes all the more apparent.”], adds Leonhard Hecht, 2. vice chairperson of the ÖH Uni Salzburg.
In conclusion, the leadership team adds: „Nur wenn wir Bildung für alle zugänglich und möglich machen und nicht nur für eine elitäre Gruppe von jenen, die es sich leisten könnten, investieren wir in eine Zukunft, von welcher alle profitieren können.
